Emma Berg, 95, of Walhalla, ND passed away Thursday, November 26, 2015 at the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla, ND. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Monday, November 30th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Askew Funeral Home, Walhalla, ND. Burial will be held in the Hillside Cemetery in Walhalla. Memorials are preferred to the Walhalla Lutheran Church or the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla.
Emma (Grafenstein) Berg, the daughter of Gottlieb and Amelia (Kappes) Grafenstein was born May 21, 1920 on the family farm southwest of Cavalier, ND. She attended school at Cavalier, graduating from Cavalier High School in 1938. She attended Jamestown College and graduated in 1940 with a Two-Year Standard Degree in Elementary Education.
On June 23, 1943, Emma was united in marriage to Eddie Rolan Berg at the Walhalla Lutheran parsonage by the Rev. Selmer Hilde. Eddie and Emma resided on the family farm east of Walhalla until the fall of that year and then moved into Walhalla. Four children were born to them during the intervening years.
Prior to her marriage, Emma taught for three years in rural schools in the vicinity of Walhalla. She continued to teach during the early years of her marriage, then retiring to accept the role of farmwife, mother, and homemaker. They continued to farm until Eddie retired in 1982, when their sons, David and Dwight purchased the family farms.
In 1961, Emma returned to her teaching career by accepting a position on the faculty of the Walhalla Public School. By attending classes during the summer months, Emma was awarded a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Mayville State University, Mayville, ND. She continued teaching at Walhalla until her retirement in 1983 to complete a total of 28 years of service in the public school system.
She was a member of the Walhalla Lutheran Church since December 25, 1943, where she was actively involved in the Sunday School, WELCA Circle, Bible Study and Church Board, holding offices in each.
Emma was an active member of the Pembilier Nursing Center Auxiliary, Walhalla Senior Citizens, Charter member of the 3-H Homemakers, Northeast District Retired Teachers, and served as Secretary-Treasurer on the Hillside Memorial Cemetery for 50 years.
Survivors include her children: Douglas (Bea) Berg, Reynolds, ND, Dwight (Debra) Berg, Walhalla, and Diane (Dean) Mercil, Laramie, WY; daughter-in-law, Sharlene Berg, Walhalla; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded death by her parents; husband, Eddie in 2000 and son, David Berg in 1999. Also preceding her in death were brothers, John, Gottlieb, and David and sisters, Alvina and Emelia Grafenstein, Amelia Hillman, Esther Ouhl, Lillian Williams, and Mary Guenther.
