Dwight (or otherwise known by his friends and family as "Dyke") was born March 11, 1933, to Eugene and Alma (Lucier) Longtin at Dr. Landry's old home in Walhalla, North Dakota. He spent his childhood in Leroy and graduated high school in 1951 at Park River. He received an associate's degree in diesel mechanics from Wahpeton State School of Science.
On June 10, 1958, Dyke married Deloria Verville in Walhalla at the St. Boniface Catholic Church. They spent their 55 years of marriage in the Leroy and Walhalla area, living on the farmstead just east of Leroy and living in their new home in Walhalla as of 1975.
Dyke was a devout Catholic and was a member and Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus. Dyke served Pembina County as County Commissioner for 12 years. For many years, he was also a Federal Crop Adjuster in North Dakota. He loved to farm, hunt, fish at the family cabin in Minaki, Ontario, and spending time with family, especially his eight grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Deloria; son, Brent (Douglas Darsow) of Lake Las Vegas, NV; son, Kevin (Laurie) of Walhalla, ND and their children Hailey, Kaci and Taylor; daughter, Brenda Lacher (Kevin) of Mandan, ND and their children Jennifer (Jon) Peterson, Kate Lynn and Michael; son Mark (Amy) of West Fargo, ND and children Brett and Brooke. He is also survived by his sisters, Isabel (Jackie) Dalsted of Bloomington, MN and Evelyn "Shorty" Hartje of Rapid City, SD.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Eugene and Alma; brother, Alvah Longtin; step-father, Fred Verville.
Dwight E. Longtin, 80, of Walhalla, died peacefully and quietly on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at the Pembilier Nursing Center in Walhalla, North Dakota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla.Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a vigil servcie at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 7th at the St. Boniface Catholic Church. Interment will be held in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Leroy, ND
The family wants to especially thank Deb Frasier, Administrator and her staff at the Pembilier Nursing Center for their absolute and outstanding care to Dyke during his end stage of life. They are angels on earth.
In lieu of cards and flowers, the family requests memorials to the Pembilier Nursing Center, 500 Delano Avenue, Walhalla, ND 58282 (please designate new floor project) or the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery Fund, Walhalla, North Dakota 58282.
