Duane Quam age 73, of Grand Forks and formerly of Backoo, ND died on Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November18, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Friday, November 17th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial in the Cavalier Cemetery.
Clinton Duane Quam was born May 8, 1933, in Osnabrock, ND to Norval and Violet (Schroeder) Quam. He was raised in Pembina County and attended school in Backoo. On October 3, 1949, he enlisted in the National Guard, and was discharged on July 21, 1950, and the same day enlisted in the Active Army. Duane love military life and was proud of his service. He served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. A few of his many military awards include: The Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Three Overseas Bars, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
On May 1, 1954, he married Faye Martineau at Pembina, ND.
Duane retired from the service on July 21, 1970. After his retirement they farmed in the Backoo area and worked at the Pembina County Courthouse. He then owned and operated Duane's Food Center in Park River, ND and was employed by Job Service of ND until his retirement in 1995.
Duane was an avid hunter and fisherman, his favorite season was deer season. Hobbies included flower gardening, making fishing lures, lefse, dill pickles, and pulling pranks.
He is survived by his wife, Faye; children, Deborah (David) McCurdy, Cavalier, ND; Sandra (Jerry) Clingenpeel, Grand Island, NE; Sharlene (Kurt) Espelien, and Phyllis (Perry) Flaten, all of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Sarah, John, and Kent McCurdy; Adam, Anya, and Alaina Clingenpeel; Eric and Tyler Espelien; Nichole and Derek Flaten; sisters, Elaine (Melvin) Lembke, Neche, ND; Janice (Joey) Wendberg, Dalbo, MN; Verdell (Edgar) Stegman, Thermopolis, WY; Lois Jean (Randy) Sott, Grand Forks, ND.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson, Coty Espelien.

Honorary Pallbearers: Anya Clingenpeel and Alaina Clingenpeel.
Casket Bearers: Sarah McCurdy, Adam Clingenpeel, John McCurdy, Kent McCurdy, Eric Espelien, Nichole Flaten, Derek Flaten, and Tyler Espelien.
