Dorothy Sunderland, 98, formerly of Cavalier, ND passed away, Friday, March 28, 2014, at Camano Island, WA. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 26, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, Cavalier, ND. The family requests memorials to the Cavalier Presbyterian Church or Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC. 28607. Burial will be held in the Cavalier Cemetery. A prayer service was also held at Avon Methodist Church in Burlington, WA.
Dorothy was born on May 14, 1915 in Nekoma, ND. to John and Emily (Orpe) Stewart. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, sister, May Egge and brother, Harry Stewart. Survivors include her children: John Paul Sunderland, Vail, Colorado, Peggy Sunderland Pattok, Burlington, WA; grandchildren; Sophie, Claire, and Jack Sunderland and J.D. Pattok. She also served as grandma to her sister May's grandchildren, Erin Ashbrenner Manning and David Ashbrenner, as May passed away before they were born. A longtime resident of Cavalier, ND, Dorothy moved to the Burlington, WA area in 1999.
She took pride in her work as a Pembina County Social Worker and assisted many members of her local community. She was active in her church, both in Cavalier and Burlington. Until the age of 95, she lived independently, drove, and volunteered at the local hospital. At age 96, she moved into an adult family care home where she lived until her death. Her family is grateful for the tender, loving care she received at Crestview Family Home by owner, Renee Hemmingsden and her staff.
