Don Quam, 82, of Langdon, ND passed away Sunday, March 15, 2009, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon, ND.
Donald W. Quam was born in Fargo, ND, on November 16, 1926, to Walter and Bess (Anderson) Quam. Don was a 1944 graduate of Fargo Central High. At age 17 he enlisted in the US Navy and was a Fireman First Class. After boot camp he was transferred to the Seabees and served in Okinawa, Japan. Upon discharge from the Navy Don attended NDSU in Fargo where he was a member of the Theta-Chi Fraternity. While a student, Don met Geneva Backes in 1948. The couple eloped and were married on April 7, 1951, at Wahpeton, ND, with Father Eckert presiding. Don and Geneva lived in Pierre, SD, until 1952 when the couple moved to the Little Pembina Ranch in West Hope Twp. near Langdon where Don farmed with his father-in-law.
Don was an active member of the community. He served as a County Commissioner in Cavalier County for 34 years, and was on the Social Services Board and the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital Board of Directors. He served as a delegate to the ND Constitutional Convention in 1972. Don was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Eagles Club, American Legion, and the VFW. In addition to farming, Don owned and operated the Quam Bus Line from 1964-1973. He was an instigator/founder of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Langdon and a field representative for the Bank of North Dakota.
Don is survived by his children: Pat (Joann) of Welland, Ont., Canada, Jon (Norma) of Globe, AZ, and Liz Anne (Tom) Conmy of Fargo, ND; grandchildren: Christopher, Marty, Jared, Brook, Chad, and Jake Quam, Andrew, Phillip, and Laura Weiss, and Tommy Conmy; ten great-grandchildren; Siblings: Fred Quam, Johnny Quam, Robert Quam, and Patricia Score as well as many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his wife Geneva, daughter Sara, and brothers Richard and Wilbur.VISITATION will be held one hour prior to service.
FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at Two Oââ¬â¢clock on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon, ND.
INTERMENT will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Langdon, ND.
MEMORIALS are preferred to the Hospice of the Red River Valley and to the Domestic Violence and Abuse Center of Langdon.
