Dean K. Horgan, 68, passed away on January 22, 2013 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Jan 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Walhalla Lutheran Church in Walhalla, ND.
Dean K. Horgan was born to Syl and Gertrude [Knutson] Horgan in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on September 1, 1944. He attended school in Walhalla, North Dakota, graduating in 1962. Dean attended Valley City State College from 1962 to 1966, where he earned a degree in teaching and coaching, while focusing on his basketball prowess. He was a pivotal member of the VCSU 1965 Hall of Fame team. On Sept. 13, 1969, he married Patricia Lowe in Valley City, ND. He taught and coached at St. Catherine High School, later serving as principal of the elementary school. Dean became involved in politics in North Dakota District 24 where he was elected to three terms in the state House of Representatives;
he was a charismatic, energetic leader who served his community and church in numerous capacities. A towering figure, Dean had a heart to match; many benefitted from his generous and compassionate nature. Dean Horgan could add a bit of levity to even the most difficult situations! He returned to his roots in the Walhalla area where he lived for the last twenty years, enjoying country life in one of his favorite places.
He leaves behind two daughters: Daena [Scott] Naasz of Prior Lake MN; Shelby [Sammie] Olson of Maple Grove, MN; one son: Jon [Anne] Horgan of St. Louis Park, MN; and five grandchildren: Jack, Ava, Callie, Henry, and Leo; brother, Terry (Ruth) Horgan of AZ; several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his fiancee, Phyllis Tongen, Walhalla, ND.
