Clinton H. Forbes, age 83, of Cavalier, ND died on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla, ND. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at 1: 00 p.m. at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held Monday, November 30th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial in the Cavalier Cemetery.
Clinton H. Forbes was born October 26, 1926, in Osborne Township of Mountrail County, North Dakota. At an early age he moved to St. Thomas, ND. Clint was the son and only child of David H. and Lydia (Godke) Forbes. He grew up and attended school at St. Thomas, ND. On December 7, 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines and served aboard the US Sheepshead in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean Middle East war zones. After his discharge on August 17, 1946, he returned to St. Thomas and graduated from high school. In 1947, Clint opened the men's store in Walhalla.
On April 17, 1949, he married Shirley R. Mayo at Cavalier, ND. In 1954, they moved to Cavalier where he owned and operated the He-Mart until 1987, when the business was taken over by his son, John. Clint continued working at the store until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Cavalier Presbyterian Church, Laverne J. Thompson American Legion Post #11, Tongue River Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, National Rifle Association, and Amateur Trapshooting Association.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; children, John Forbes, Cavalier and his friend Stella, Styles and Barbara Barron and friend Donavon Sparrow, Henderson, CO; grandchildren, Robert (Tammy) Barron and Julie "Barron" (Andrew) LeRoy, and cherished great grandsons, Dominique M. Martinez and Robert Forbes Barron, all of the Denver area; sister-in-law, Beverly Mayo, Cavalier, ND and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Clint in death were his parents, son-in-law, Allyn Barron and brother-in-law, John J. Mayo.
Clergy: Rev. John Werth.
Military Rites by the Lavern J. Thompson Post #11, Cavalier American Legion.
Music: Erin Mayo, Angela Trembeath, and Michelle Gullickson, Vocalists and Beth Kemp, Accompanist and Organist.
