Bessie Field, 103, of Langdon, ND passed away on Friday, Apirl 29, 2011 at Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon.

Bessie F. McFarlane was born July 23, 1907 to Alex and Laura (Dunford) McFarlane in Harvey Township near Langdon, ND. She attended a rural school before graduating from Langdon High School in 1926. Bessie was the first Rainbow Worthy Advisor when the Order was chartered in 1925. After high school, Bessie went on to attend Valley City Teachers College. In both high school and college, Bessie was a member of the women’s basketball team.

Bessie married Earl Field on December 5, 1932 in Langdon. She and Earl lived on the farm in Harvey Township for 51 years and then moved to Langdon in the late 1960s. Bessie was a hard worker and contributed to the farm. Bessie enjoyed curling, playing cards, yard work, gardening and baking. Some say that she had the best fried chicken in Cavalier County!

Bessie was involved in Eastern Star, Stilwell Ladies Aide, West Hope Homemakers, and various other organizations. In 2007, there was a big celebration for her 100th birthday. Bessie was fortunate enough to be able to live in her own house on her own until she was 102 years old. Last year, she became a resident of Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.

Bessie is survived by her three sons: Lorne (Gertie) of Langdon, Tom (Beth) of Sheridan, WY, and Duane (Joanne) of Langdon; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law: Ann McFarlane.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers: John, Robert, and Harvey; four sisters: Laura, Ada, Elsie, and Emily; and a grandson: David Field.

Funeral services for Bessie will be held on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Langdon, ND. Visitation will take place from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Brooks Funeral Home in Langdon and for one hour before services at the church on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be sent to Maple Manor Care Center, Cavalier County Memorial Hospital, or the American Cancer Society.
