Bernice E. Hartje, 88, of Cavalier, ND passed into eternal life on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Woodside Village in Grand Forks ND. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2012, at 2:00 p.m.at the Cavalier Baptist Church, Cavalier. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 30th from 5:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, and one hour prior to service at the church.
Bernice Evelyn Flint was born March 24, 1924, to Robert and Mary Victoria (Ladoceur) Flint in Cavalier, ND. She graduated from Cavalier High School and for a time taught in a one-room school. On August 3, 1944, she married Clifford Hartje. Clifford enlisted in the Navy and Bernice lived in Gulfport, MS, while he was serving in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Following his discharge from the Navy in April of 1946, they moved to the family farm near Glasston, ND. They made their home in Cavalier, where they raised their family. Clifford passed away on November 17, 2005, after 61 years of marriage.
She was a lifelong member of the Cavalier Baptist Church, Blue Ribbon Homemakers, and American Legion Auxiliary. Through the years she enjoyed writing poetry, sewing, and cooking for a crowd. Bernice will be remembered most as a terrific Gam, bridge player, and pie maker.
Survivors include her son, Lynn Hartje; daughters and sons-in-law: Kathy and Don Sayre, Kristi and Michael Morrison, Karen and Curtis Morrison, grandchildren: Guy Sayre, Greg and Andrea Sayre, Amanda Sayre and Ben Keiffer; Paul Morrison and Amanda Keim-Morrison, Brian and Deidra Morrison, and Melissa Morrison; Carey Morrison and Jared Pennoyer, Lynae Morrison, Dana Morrison; great grandchildren: Sam and Luke Sayre; Evelyn Lou Keiffer and Sabin Pennoyer; sisters-in-law, Marlene Murtonen and Ruth Dhondt; brothers-in-law, Harris Hartje and Bob Schroepfer; and several nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; brother, Larry and sisters: Myrtle, Emma, Laura, Irene, and Doris.
