Barbara Schaffer

Barbara Schaffer, 85, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2017 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

Barbara Morris was born April 22, 1932 at Cando, ND to Paul and Hildreth (Keen) Morris. She graduated from Cando High School and attended NDSU, graduating in 1954 with a degree in home economics education and science. Barb taught in Bisbee, Cando, and Rock Lake, ND. She then began 20 years with NDSU as a teacher educator supervising student teachers placed in schools in ND and MN.

Barb married her childhood sweetheart, John Schaffer, on July 13, 1957 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando. They lived in Cando, East Grand Forks, MN and Langdon, ND. Early in their marriage, she and John purchased a lake home in Manitoba, Canada and spent summers there volunteering and helping disadvantaged boys learn to swim, waterski, and enjoy lake life. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2007 with family at McDonald Lake in Minnesota.

Barb held offices in her profession at local, state, and national levels. She enjoyed sewing and was involved in “Make It Yourself with Wool” local and state competitions. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, word games, and oil painting.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband John in 2010, and sister Pauline. She is survived by nieces: Linda Necas, Becky Schaffer Lehring, & Barbara Fahey and nephews: Mark, Rick, & Jamie Schaffer.

A memorial service for Barb will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home in Cando, ND with burial following at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cando.
