Arthur William Vaughn was born February 10, 1923, at Grafton, ND, to William Charles and Claire (Morden) Vaughn. He was raised as an only child, but with childhood neighbors and relatives nearby he had opportunities for boyhood companionship.
His education was obtained in the rural Cranley School District. After he left school, he farmed with his father. In addition to the various seed and forage crops, Arthur raised cattle for revenue and family consumption.
On December 16, 1947, at high noon, he married Corene Pearl Basher at the Cavalier Presbyterian Church manse, with the Rev. W.L. Patteson officiating. Arthur and Corene would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December of 2007.
Until 1977, they lived in a rural area near Cavalier, on the farm purchased by his grandfather in the early 1900's. In 1976, Arthur sold the original homestead to his son, Thomas Arthur. The farm has remained in the Vaughn family up to the present day. Tom's son, who represents the fifth generation of that family, works the farm with their father. Through the use of modern farming practices and techniques, they continue to maintain a thriving and productive operation. Arthur retired in 1985, leaving the farming decisions to his son, Thomas.
In 1977, they moved to Cavalier to a home built on property previously owned by his parents. Arthur and Corene continued to live in their comfortable home.
Arthur has always been active in church and community, following in the footsteps of his great grandfather, Thomas Charles Vaughn, a charter Elder in the newly formed Cavalier Presbyterian Church. Arthur has been ordained as Deacon in that present day congregation. In 1968, he was selected and ordained as an Elder of his church in Cavalier.
Arthur's life has been full of challenges in a changing and technology-oriented world. As he experienced failing health, he retained the feeling of pride and satisfaction in knowing that, as a farmer, he was a good steward of the land which enabled him to provide a comfortable living for his family.
He is survived by his wife Corene; children, Zelda (Danne) Hartje and Thomas (Rita) Vaughn all of Cavalier, ND; Georgia (Brad) Rice, Minneapolis, MN; Janet (Gary) Sjol, East Grand Forks, MN; James (friend Patty) Vaughn, Cavalier, ND; nine grandsons; three granddaughters; seven great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons; his cousins, George (Dorothy) Morden and Erlene (Norman) Ray, all of Cavalier, ND.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother who died at birth in 1919 and is buried in the Morden plot in the Cavalier Cemetery, and cousin, Esther Morden Dunn.
