Amelda Ann (Stremick) Hornung, age 90, died peacefully at Pembilier Nursing Home in Walhalla, ND on Sunday, July 30, 2017.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Walhalla, ND. The Reverend James Ermer will be officiating the funeral mass. Visitation will be Thursday, August 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rosary and Scripture Service to begin at 7:30 PM. Interment will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery.
Amelda was born on July 10, 1927 in Langdon, ND to Philip and Emma (Urlaub) Stremick. She was the third oldest child in a family of nine. She attended school in the Langdon and Dresden areas before coming to Walhalla with her parents in 1943. On June 24, 1947, she married Robert Hornung Jr. at St. Boniface Church in Walhalla ND. They eventually settled on a farm northwest of Walhalla, where they spent the rest of their married life.
Rob and Amelda were blessed with five children. Amelda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She spent her entire life being a homemaker and raising her family. Amelda was employed at the Dairy Queen for three years. She was a teacher's aide at the Walhalla Public School for two years and worked at the Pembilier Nursing Home for four years. Amelda was an active member of St. Boniface Altar Society serving as chairperson for four years. Amelda's other interests were gardening, quilting club, playing cards, square dancing and helping with the farming and ranching operation. Her main priorities in life were her religious faith, supporting her husband and family, and encouraging all her children to obtain a four year college degree. Her last four years she resided at the Pembilier Nursing Home
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Robert, and their children, Dan (Deb) Hornung, Jamestown, ND; Mary (Pete) Murtaugh, Rugby, ND; Kathy (Mike) Fridgen, Stillwater, MN; Joe (Sharon) Hornung, Cupertino, CA; and Susan (Steve) Swiontek, Devils Lake, ND; her sisters Evelyn Arneson, St. Paul, MN; and Anna (Larry) Werven, Walhalla, ND; brothers, Ed (Marlene) Stremick and Philip (Myrna) Stremick, all of Walhalla, ND; Bill (Marlene) Stremick, Cavalier, ND; and Dan (Vera) Stremick, Fargo, ND. Amelda is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mildred Hornung and Mercedes Stedman, granddaughter Kristina Murtaugh, and great grandson Benjamin Newfield.
Memorials are welcomed to St. Boniface Catholic Church and Pembilier Nursing Center, both Walhalla, ND.
