Aelred Dettler, 88, of Langdon, ND, passed away Friday, October 18,
2013, at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon.
Aelred was born on November 9, 1924, to Leonard and Beatrice
(Fitzgerald) Dettler at their farm near Langdon. He was raised and
educated in Langdon where he graduated from St. Alphonsus High School
as Valedictorian. Aelred continued his education at the University of
North Dakota where he pursued a degree in Engineering. An illness in
the family brought Aelred home, and he began his lifelong career and
love of farming. Aelred was united in marriage in 1953 to Doreen
Carignan in Olga, ND. They became the loving parents of six
children. In 1978, Aelred and Doreen built a home a mile east of the
home farm where they lived until moving into Langdon in 1997. Aelred
was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the Knights of
Columbus, and the Langdon Eagles Club. He was an avid crossword
puzzle worker, enjoyed woodworking, and collected trains and tractors.
Aelred is survived by his wife Doreen, and children: Kevin (Becky)
Dettler of Doland, SD; Mary Beth (James) Sexton of West Fargo, ND;
Steven (Barb) Dettler of Langdon, ND; Chalmer (Lori) Dettler of
Langdon, ND; David (Tam) Dettler of Souix Falls, SD; and Joni (Dennis)
Flaten of Devils Lake, ND, 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren,
and a sister, Moira Yahna of Dayton, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gerald Dettler,
sisters Joan Olson and Ellen Edwardson.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, October 20, 2013, from 3:00 to
5:00 pm, at the Brooks Funeral Home of Langdon. Visitation will also
take place for one hour before the time of the services at the church.
Prayer Service will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2013, at 7 :00 pm,
at the St Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon, ND.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, October 21, 2013, at
10:00 am, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon, ND.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Langdon, ND.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Alphonsus
School Foundation.
